Groundbreaking ceremonies on a new B.C.-based digital media centre herald not only construction of a new building, but the start of a community transformation and neighbourhood revitalization.
The Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC) in Vancouver last week broke ground on a Centre for Digital Media, home to Canada's first professional graduate degree program in digital media of its kind.
The 51,000-sq. ft. building combines social, learning and student residential spaces for those enrolled in the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program. The mixed-use facility will also provide ground floor classrooms and studios, along with three floors (76 units) of student designated rental housing.
The 16-month MDM program plus internship engages students in real world projects and coursework, helping to build valuable leadership experience, hands-on workplace exposure and top industry connections.
The MDM degree is jointly accredited by four leading post-secondary institutions: the BC Institute of Technology, Emily Carr University of Art Design, Simon Fraser University, and The University of British Columbia.
